Issues & Solutions

McGraw-Hill Handwriting CD-ROM software is an easy-to-use handwriting component that helps teachers reinforce different handwriting programs used in their classrooms.  Teachers can create handwriting worksheets for instruction in cursive or manuscript. Simply select the text and font you wish to use and print it out on lined handwriting paper. The handwriting CD-ROM is so expedient that you can customize worksheets and activities, including cross-curricular practice.

ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

Issue:   Do I need the CD-ROM to run the program?

Solution: No, once the fonts are installed you no longer need the CD-ROM to be inserted.

Issue: Instructions for using the fonts installed by the program.

Solution:

Using the Cursive fonts:

Windows and Macintosh:

When you install the program a program group called Link and Unlink Cursive will also be installed.  Within that program will be the following programs: LinkLetter DN, LinkLetter ZB, Undo LinkLetter DN, and Undo LinkLetter ZB. On Macintosh these programs will appear in the Apples menu.

Macintosh:

When installing on a Macintosh, Link and Unlink Cursive will be installed.  Within that program will be the following programs: LinkLetter DN, LinkLetter ZB, Undo LinkLetter DN, and Undo LinkLetter ZB. These programs will appear in the Apple menu.

Note: LinkLetter DN and Undo LinkLetter DN will not work with the ZB fonts and vice versa.

Letters that you type using a Cursive font must be linked.  To link letters:

1.       Open your word processing program and choose a Cursive font.

2.       Type your document.

3.       Highlight the text you want to link.  Choose Cut from the Edit menu.

4.       a. Windows:

1.) Click Start, Programs and click Link and Unlink Cursive.

2.) Click LinkLetter for the font you are using.

b. Macintosh:

1.) From the Apple menu choose LinkLetter for the font you are using.  If you font

changes after you choose LinkLetter, change your font back to Cursive and adjust

          the size as necessary.

5.       Return to your document and choose Paste from the Edit menu.

6.       To make corrections, type as you normally would, but remember to repeat the Cut/LinkLetter/Paste process when you finish.

To unlink letters: follow the same steps as before, but this time, choose Undo LinkLetter for the font you are using.  Then change the test to a non-cursive font.

Using Fonts with Rules: To extend the rule past the last letter in a line, use underscores (Shift-hyphen).  Also use underscores to make blank lines with rules.

Issue:  Does this program run on Windows NT, 2000, XP and Macintosh OS X?

Solution:   Cursory testing performed on Windows XP, 2000, NT 4.0 and ME machines have not revealed any issues.  For Macintosh use, the program runs fine in Classic mode.

"Our customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and applications, and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end systems to meet customer needs.  Because of this, we cannot guarantee that our software will always work as expected as new operating systems and other applications are developed.  We encourage you to give our products a 'test drive' on any new system you plan to implement.  If you are not satisfied with the performance of our product, we will do our best to deliver a compatible product to you in a timely manner or refund your money."

Issue:  Is this program networkable?

Solution:  The program cannot run from the network. However, the font installer file can be copied to the network and then run on each workstation because each workstation needs to have the fonts installed to its hard drive.

Issue: Details about the fonts.

Solution:

1. Ball-and-stick, Ball-and-stick with Rules, Dashes, and Dashes with Rules are fonts that form letters from lines and circles. They are not D'Nealian(r) or Zaner-Bloser(r) style.

2. Lettersound Pictures uses pictures to portray letter sounds. It is useful for preschool/kindergarten beginning readers and can be used just for fun. Select Lettersound Pictures from the Fonts menu, and as you type letters, pictures with corresponding initial sounds appear: type "a" and get a picture of an apple; "b," a book, etc.

3. DN Manuscript looks identical to the D'Nealian style of beginning handwriting. Use at least 24 point size for readability.

4. ZB Manuscript looks like the Modern version of Zaner-Bloser beginning handwriting. Use at least 24 point size for readability.

Issue: LinkLetter Alert: "Cut data from your word processor."

Solution: LinkLetter is not a word processing application. To use LinkLetter you must first open a word processing application and then cut the text from a document.

Issue: Why don't the fonts show in my Fonts menu?

Solution: You may have too many fonts. The Mac is limited to 128 font suitcases. Some Windows machines also have font limitations. You may need to remove some fonts.

Issue: The middle line does not display when I use a Rules font.

Solution: The center line may not display on your monitor, but it will appear on the printout.

Issue: Why can't I type lowercase accented characters?

Solution: If you are using Microsoft Word, go to Tools/AutoCorrect; then to the AutoCorrect tab, and uncheck "Replace text as you type."

Issue: LinkLetter Size Limitations.

Solution: If your document is over 6,000 characters, LinkLetter may not be able to convert it all at once. Simply select smaller sections of the document and convert it piece by piece.

Issue: Double Spacing after a Period using a Rules Font.

Solution: If you are using a font with rules and you double space after a period, the second space will result in a blank space instead of blank rules. To avoid this problem, simply single space after a period.

Issue: Epson Printer.

Solution: Epson printer drivers have difficulty printing these fonts at larger sizes on both Macs and PCs. Use a different printer if possible.

Issue: Lost Formatting.

Solution: If your word processing application doesn't put Rich Text Format on the Clipboard when you cut, and properly process it when you paste, LinkLetter cannot reformat the text. Some word processing applications do not use Rich Text Format very well.
