Issue: Error “ETCR database not found” while using Win95B

Solution:  There are 2 possible causes for this error message:

  • At the prompt you typed X:\ for the database root directory. Substitute the appropriate drive letter of your CD-ROM drive for X.

OR

  • The ETCR.ini file may not have the correct drive for the database. You simply need to edit a file and tell it the letter designated for the CD-ROM drive.
  1. Go to START, then RUN.
  2. Type ETCR.INI in the open box and press ENTER.
  3. On the line that says: Database=
  4. Replace everything after the "Database=" with the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
  5. After making the change, save the file, close the window, then try the program again.

Issue:  Error  “Extract failed:  return from Extract=-4” when installing Acrobat Reader

Solution:  Per the developer:

This can occur on a system with very little free disk space on the C: drive. This is what may be happening:

·         During the install process, the compressed files are inflated into a temp directory on C: (or wherever the swap file is located) and used temporarily until installation is finished. If there is no room, you will have problems, it needs room for the installation utility to  temporary store the uncompressed installation file and also the room for the program files to reside.

  • Another thing to check is if it is an older CD drive, make sure disk is clean - This behavior can be due to part of the disk being dirty - it can start but not finish an operation.

Issue:  When trying to run the ETCR I receive a message that msvert40.dll is not a Win32 application.

Solution: This message indicates that the incorrect setup program was run. This usually happens when setup is run from the 'add/remove programs' in the control panel which installs setup16.

  1. Run the setup32 install by clicking on Start, then Run
  2. Type X:setup32.exe and click enter. (If needed, change the X to your CD drive letter.)

Issue:  Does this product run on Windows NT, Windows 2000/XP or OSX?

Solution:  This product has had cursory testing on Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.  For Mac, the program must be booted into OS9 to run correctly. The program will not run in Classic mode from OSX.

MACINTOSH

Issue:  Error:  “Execution Error” when running on Macintosh.

Solution:  There are three known possibilities:

  1. Check to be sure that the Acrobat Reader program has been installed.
  2. Check your system resources.  If you have only 8 MB of RAM, then you may need to turn Virtual Memory ON. (Click on the Apple/Control Panel/Memory and turn on VM.)
  3. Launch and then minimize Adobe Acrobat Reader; Launch ETCR; try opening a document. Minimize ETCR and maximize Adobe Acrobat Reader.  The document should be displayed.

Issue:  Error “The symbol font must be installed…” in Acrobat Reader.

Solution The font symbol is installed in the System Folder:  Fonts Folder and the Apple GXGraphics extension is installed and active.

Do one or more of the following:

  • Make sure there are no more then 128  fonts in the System Folder:  Fonts Folder, and then restart the computer. (Don’t remove the fonts Adobe Sans MM, Adobe Serif MM, Courier, Helvetica, Times, Symbol, and Zapf Dingbats from the Fonts Folder, since Acrobat requires them.)

OR

  • Disable the Apple GXGraphics extension, restart the computer, and then reinstalled Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange.

Issue:  Error: “Cannot use any more fonts” or “Only 128 fonts”

Solution:  When you add fonts to the System Folder: Fonts folder in Mac OS, the system returns the error, "The Macintosh cannot use any more fonts at this time; only 128 fonts can be used at once." or the error, "Only 128 fonts can be used at once. To add a new font, first remove one from the Fonts folder."

·         Use a font management utility (e.g., Adobe Type Manager [ATM] Deluxe, Symantec Suitcase) that lets you store your fonts outside the System Folder: Fonts folder, then add fonts in that utility.

OR

·         Move font suitcases out of the System Folder: Fonts folder before adding new fonts, so the folder contains a total of 128 or fewer font suitcases.

The Mac OS System Folder: Fonts folder can only contain 128 font suitcases. A font suitcase can contain more than one font, however, so the Fonts folder can contain more than 128 fonts total.
