START-UP INSTRUCTIONS:

To open the Skillbuilder Interactive Workbook:

  1. Click the My Computer icon on the desktop and double-click the CD-ROM drive. (Skip this step if you are a Macintosh user.)
  2. Double-click the Skillbuilder icon on the CD-ROM to open the program.
  3. Type your user name in the User Name field, press the Tab key, and enter your password in the Password field. Click OK. If the username and password fields are left blank, no scores will be recorded in the Management System.

Note: For security purposes, it is strongly recommended that you change this initial password after logging in the first time. (See “Adding, Changing, and Deleting Instructors” below.) Be sure to keep your user name and password in a secure place to ensure that you—and other instructors only—will be able to access the Management System records.

Note: You can leave the user name and password fields blank to use the program without saving any scores.

ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

Windows Issues:

Issue:  Management System takes a long time to load.

Solution:  After logging in as a teacher, then clicking “Teacher Tools” from the Main Menu screen, the Skillbuilder program closes and the Windows desktop loads.  On the Windows operating system, it appears as though nothing is happening and that the Management System is not going to load.

It takes about 20-25 seconds for the Skillbuilder Management System to load after clicking on the Teacher Tools.  In the time immediately after the teacher selects Teacher Tools, they should not click on anything or attempt to reload the product.

Issue:  Will this program run on Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows ME, or Windows XP?

Solution:  This program has received cursory testing on Windows 2000/NT/ME and  XP. It appears to works fine on each, please see comment below.

Macintosh Issues:

Issue:  Troubleshooting section Typo

Solution:  The troubleshooting section of the MAC READMEFIRST file states “If you have difficulty launching the CD-ROM or if the video and sound do not play smoothly, you may need to Reduce the System memory on your Macintosh…”

“Reduce” is incorrect. The user may need to increase their system memory in order to run the CD and optimize performance of sound and video.

Issue: Student/Instructor/Group info doesn’t appear on Mac OS - Management System

Solution:  The user needs to change the monitor color settings to thousands or millions of colors.  At 256 colors, the student, instructor or group data only appears when it has been rolled over or clicked on (highlighted).

General Issues:

Issue:  Error “!=rect(320, 240, 960, 720)” when adding a duplicate student name

Solution:  This occurs if you add the same student name twice. The management system will not function properly and various error messages will appear.

Exit the program, restart the machine and then re-launch the program. The management system should function properly.  Do not enter the same student more than once.

Issue:  Error “-120 trying to open Student.dbf files” - Management System

Solution:  If the Glencoe folder has been moved to another location, it should be returned to the original folder on the hard drive or network.  If you do not know the original location, check the “Glencoess.ini” file.

Issue: Program Error “Runpassdir6” message - Management System won’t launch

Solution:  Check the color settings.  The management system will not work on some computers that are set to 256 colors.  Changing the colors to thousands or millions will resolve the problem.

Issue:  Blank page is output when printing

Solution:  The print driver may be outdated. The problem may relate to the fact that the Skillbuilder program is sending 16-bit data to the printer, and the print driver may only support 24-bit data.  To correct the problem, have the user change their display settings to 24-bit true color.
