This program focuses on reading comprehension skills so students can become better readers.  Tests in the program can be used for student placement and to identify where students need more instruction.

After clicking the Comprehension Skills icon, a message states there is a possible mapping error

MACINTOSH  ISSUES:  There are no known Macintosh issues at this time.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Windows:

·         Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0

·         Pentium 100 MHz PC or faster

·         16 MB RAM minimum

·         9 MB hard drive space, approximately  (10 MB required on workstations for server/client install)

·         256-color, 14-inch monitor

·         4x or better CD drive

·         Optional – sound card

 

MAC:

·          OS 8 or higher

·         Hard disk space  - 12 6 MB for network install

INSTALLATION TIPS:

 

WINDOWS:

 

Server and Client install:

1.        Install at the root of a directory.

2.        Install on the server first, then use the Client setup on the workstations.

3.        The directory should be mapped on the workstations.

4.        Peer-to-Peer setup:  the server hard drive must be mapped to a letter drive on the workstation before installing the Client setup.

5.        Microsoft Agent, if used, must be installed on the workstations.  The installer is on the CD, in the folder labeled Agent.  Double-click the icon named agent.exe to start the installer.

6.        You are ready to register the instructor into the Management System.

 

Standalone:

1.        Insert the CD in the drive and double-click the My Computer icon, then the CD drive letter. (Usually the drive letter is D.)

2.        When the window appears, double-click the Install icon and follow screen prompts.

3.        Select Program Folder screen:  Click Next to accept the icon default folder "Jamestown's Comprehension Skills," or change the folder name then click Next.

a.        Setup Type screen – select Standalone then click Next.

4.        Support Content screen:  is where program lessons and testing material will be installed.

a.        Had drive install – places all files on the chosen hard drive

b.       CD/Hard Drive install – requires the CD to run the program, and uses less hard drive space.

5.        Drive List window – the drive where the program will install, then click Next.  For standalone, normally it is the C drive.

6.        Subjects - if you chose to install the Support Content, the next window asks which subjects to install.  Put an X in the boxes for the subject to be installed, then click Next.

7.        Classroom Info screen – indicate if more than one computer is in the classroom, then click Next.

a.        Single computer – records are automatically stored on the hard drive.

b.       More than one computer – you decide whether to keep records on the hard drive or floppy disk,

8.        After the program installs, you will be prompted to install Microsoft Agent.  (You need audio capability to use the Agent.)

9.        After all installs, restart the computer.  The program icon is under Start/Programs as
Jamestown's Comprehension Skills unless you changed the name when installing.

 

MAC Installation:

 

Network – the installer copies the entire program to the volume to the server.  Records save where the content is located.  Records are kept while students and teachers are logged in.  Teachers and students require full permissions to the Records directory, in the Jcomp folder.

  1. Insert the CD in the drive and double-click the Setup icon on the JCOMP CD.
  2. Read the welcoming screen info, then click Next to continue.
  3. For Setup Type:  choose Network  then click Next.
  4. In the Drive List window:  choose the hard drive where you want to install, then click Next.
  5. After installing, an alias to the application should be created on each workstation.  The application, CompSkills, is in the Support directory of the Jcomp folder.

 

Standalone:

  1. With the CD in the drive, double-click the Setup icon on the JCOMP CD.
  2. Read the welcoming screen and click Next to continue.
  3. For the Setup Type, choose Standalone.
  4. In the Drive List window, choose the hard drive where you want to install, then click Next.
  5. Where to install content files: 

·         Hard Drive install puts all files on the hard drive.  On the next window, check the radio buttons for subject(s) to be installed.

·         CD-ROM/HD install require the CDs in the drive when using the program.

  1. Student data storage - this final screen choose hard drive or floppy disk, then click continue.
  2. After installing, restart the computer.

GENERAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

 

Issue:   Will this program run on Windows 2000,  NT 4.0,  ME,  XP  and Macintosh OS X?

 

Solution:   Cursory testing performed on Windows 2000, NT 4.0, ME, and XP machines have not revealed any issues.   For Macintosh use, the program runs fine in Classic mode only.

 

Our customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and applications, and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end systems to meet customer needs.  Because of this, we cannot guarantee our software will always work as expected as new operating systems and other applications are developed.  We encourage you to give our products a 'test drive' on any new system you plan to implement.  If you are not satisfied with the performance of our product, we will do our best to deliver a compatible product to you in a timely manner or refund your money.

Issue:  What is Microsoft Agent?

 

Solution:  Students begin the program and are greeted by Merlin, the Microsoft Agent, who guides them through the program.  He explains how to move through the program and take a test.

Issue:   Rights needed for Server/Client installation

 

Solution:  

 

§         Both students and instructors need full permissions to the JCOMP folder. 

§         For Novell, these permissions must be equal to:   read, write, modify, file scan, create, and erase.

§         Permissions must be set to allow both teachers and students full access to the Records directory.

Issue:   How to register a teacher, adding class files and enrolling students

 

Solution: 

 

Register the teacher:

  • Launch the software, and after the introductory screens, click on Teacher Logon.
  • ID screen:  As a first-time user, enter the default teacher ID then click OK or press Enter.
  • Click the Add a Teacher button and add the teacher name and ID to the teacher list.
  • Change a teacher ID by clicking the Change ID button and adding a new 8-character alpha/numeric ID and click OK.

 

Creating Class Files

  1. Log on as a Teacher.
  2. Click the Add New Class button and enter a class name  then Click OK or press ENTER.
  3. The next screen lets you correct or verify the class name.

 

Enrolling Students

  1. Log on as a Teacher and click on a class name.
  2. Click the Add Student button.
  3. Click OK after entering each of these:  student's first name, student's last name , and 8-character alpha/numeric student ID.
  4. Click the reading level for the student then click OK.  The level can be changed at any time.
  5. Verify the name, ID and reading level.  (Record the name and ID for later reference, if needed.)
  6. To add students to another class, click the Go Back button to select or create another class.

Issue:  Create Student Data Disk

 

Solution:   If saving to floppy disks, you need to create the data disks:

 

  1. Logon as a Teacher.
  2. Click the class under List of Classes, insert a blank floppy disk, click the Add Student button.
  3. Click OK after entering each of these:  student's first name, student's last name , and 8-character alpha/numeric student ID.
  4. Select a reading level.
  5. Verify the student name, ID and reading level.  (Record the name and ID for reference, if needed.)
  6. Eject the floppy disk.

WINDOWS ISSUES

 

Issue:   After clicking the program icon, a message states there is a possible mapping error

 

Solution:   For network use, make sure the network drive where the program is installed can be accessed by the workstation.  If necessary, map the server directory to the workstation and install Comprehension Skills on the workstation as a CLIENT.

  1. For network use, make sure users have full permissions to the JCOMP folder on the server.
  2. Make sure the program was installed at the root of the directory.
