Issue: My students completed the Placement test; I see a score but no placement level.

Solution:  This issue occurs when the student did not click the Exit button at the end of the placement test and instead clicked the red X to exit the browser. Each of these students will need to log in again and click Start, which will take them to the end of the placement test. Then they must hit the Exit button in order for the scores and placement to be sent to our database. This is immediate so you will see their placement suggestion as soon as they hit Exit.

Issue: My student has completed the Placement test; what do I do next?

Solution: Once the student completes the placement test, teachers will need to confirm or adjust the results. Here are the steps:

The teacher will do the following:

1.       Login as the teacher.

2.       Click Class/Students.

3.       Click the Set/Reset link in the Placement column to the right of the class name.

4.       Students that took the placement test will have a Placement Test Scores number and the Trek they were placed into (Placement Level column).

You have two options at this point for students that have taken the placement test:

A. You can accept the Placement Level Trek in which Jamestown Reading Navigator has placed the student. To do this, click the box to the right of the drop down menu and click the Set box. Then click Set Level at the bottom of the screen.

B. You can change the Placement Level Trek and/or Journey by using the drop down menus. Select the Placement Trek and/or Journey you would like for the student from the drop down menus, and then click the box to the right. Next click Set Level at the bottom of the screen.

At this time, do not use the SET ALL box. Future enhancements that will improve this feature are planned.

Any student that has not logged in and completed the placement test will not have a score. Make sure to not set their Trek level until after they complete the placement test.

If the test was administered offline please make sure the teacher enters the student’s Trek placement before the student logs in. if not, the student will be forced to take the online placement test.

Issue: Students receive the error: “A shared object error has occurred.  Your system administrator must update your browser settings before you can continue with Jamestown Reading Navigator in this browser. Please click here to close the LP window, ask to have your settings updated and try again.”

Solution: A shared object, sometimes referred to as a "Flash cookie," is a data file that can be created on your computer by the sites that you visit. Shared objects are most often used to enhance your web-browsing experience--for example, by allowing you to personalize the look and feel of a website that you frequently visit. Shared objects, by themselves, can't do anything to or with the data on your computer. More important, shared objects can never access or remember your e-mail address or other personal information--unless you willingly provide such information. To adjust the amount of space allocated on your machine for these “Flash cookies” following these steps:

1.       Click this link: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html

2.       Adjust the Global Storage Settings to at least 10mb (100mb recommended)

If that does not work, click here: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html and adjust the Website Storage Settings for www.readingnavigator.com (you will need to select the website from the list and adjust individually).

Note: These settings may need to be adjusted at the workstation level or when logged on as the student user; it depends on how the school’s network is configured. You may also want to ask if the school tech can adjust these settings globally, as it would be much more efficient.
