GENERAL ISSUES AND
SOLUTIONS: |
Issue: Will this program run on Windows XP, |
Solution: Testing performed on Windows XP and **Note: Older programs with a 2001 or earlier copyright
will require QuickTime be installed from the CD-ROM. Also some pictures might
appear grainy due to the NTFS platform. Our customer base uses a wide variety of operating systems and
applications, and our software must be developed to be used on some lower end
systems to meet customer needs.
Because of this, we cannot guarantee that our software will always work
as expected as new operating systems and other applications are
developed. We encourage you to give

Issue: Is this program networkable? |
Solution: Virtual Labs that accompany the 2005-2006© are networkable. These
CD-ROMs will have a SetupFull
executable which will allow the users to select a location where they would
like the program to be installed. This executable will also enable users to run
the program without the CD in the drive. Also offered on the CD-ROM, is a Setup executable to install the
program to the hard drive and require the CD to run. All 2007© or newer will
auto run and will not offer a setup feature. |
Issue: The speaker button does not work in the
existing Chapter Presentations. |
Solution: In the existing Chapter Presentations, the speaker
is a non-working button on the screen. The developers did not remove it when
they created the screen captures. |
Issue: When the students save their presentations or quizzes, where do they
save to? |
Solution: C:\Glencoe\Results\Name of Program\ItemText. If the student did a Quiz, then the end
of the path would be: QuizText, a
Journal JourText, and a Presentation PreBuild. |
Solution: It normally
takes approximately one minute to launch the program. If it takes longer, then check to see that
the computer has enough free RAM to run the program. |
Solution: 1.
If using
speakers or headphones, check that they are plugged in and set at an
appropriate volume. 2.
Check that the
computer’s volume control is set at an appropriate setting. |
Issue: The printer
is not working. |
Solution: 1.
Make sure the
printer is plugged in and turned on. 2.
Print from
another application to determine if the problem is hardware related. 3.
Contact your
school’s system administrator or hardware technician to check that the
correct printer drivers for your system have been installed. 4.
Download the
latest print driver. |
Issue: Slide text is
lost or moved when inserting additional slides in the Presentation Builder. |
Solution: When a slide is selected in the presentation
building process, a green light turns on above that frame and it is
considered highlighted until
another slide is selected. If a new slide is inserted before the highlighted
slide, on some following slides text is lost or changed. Highlight the slide
in front of where the new slide is to be inserted. Do not insert a new slide before a highlighted slide. |

Issue: Is it possible
to print various screens other than in the Tables and Journals? |
Solution: The software is programmed to print on certain
screens. These screens will have a print button on them. |
Issue: The program won’t launch.

Solution: 1.
Make sure the
CD is in the CD-ROM drive. 2.
Quit all other
programs that are running, including screen savers. 3.
Launch a
different CD program to determine if it is a hardware problem. 4.
Check all
cable connections to the computer’s hardware. Windows: 1.
Run Setup to ensure that the installation
was complete. 2.
Double click
in order - My Computer icon, the CD drive, then the
specific executable file (i.e bdol.exe). Macintosh: 1.
Ensure there
is adequate RAM by clicking & pulling down the Apple menu (upper left) and selecting About This Macintosh. 2.
Check that the
Largest Unused Block is at least 4500K free
RAM. You may be able to add more by
disabling certain extensions that automatically engage when the computer is
started. |

Windows:
Issue: No “setup.exe” file on the CD to install the program. |
Solution: This is a known issue in the Life, Earth and
Physical Science Interactive CDs dated 9/99. Please see below for the
workaround: 1.
Click on the My
Computer icon and then double-click
on the CD-ROM drive 2.
Click on the Science—Windows folder. 3.
Locate the
executable for the program (i.e. lifescience.exe)
and right click on it. 4.
Left-click Create Shortcut and place it on the Desktop. 5.
Close the
window and double-click the new icon on your Desktop. Note:
This only copies the executable to the
Desktop, not the program. The CD will still need to be in the drive at the
time of use. |
Issue: The Glencoe
Group Icon is not under the Start/Programs
menu. |

Solution: Open Windows Explorer to ensure the program is installed on the hard
drive. If it is not found, follow the normal installation instructions. |

Issue: For a graph, only the page
heading prints on a networked HP4000 printer. |
Solution: Please see below: 1. Make sure the latest print drivers are downloaded
from the HP website. 2. Change the display setting to 24 bit or another
color setting. 3. There maybe a conflict between
the HP print driver and PrintOMatic Xtra which is used to print.
You can check their site at: http://www.printomatic.com/tech for
additional information. Note: Information
obtained at this website is solely the opinions of Electronic Ink, the
maker of PrintOMatic. |

Issue: |
Solution: Normally this occurs when two or more
versions of Quick Time are installed on the same PC. Uninstall
QuickTime Have by running the uninstaller for all versions of Quick Time.
(It can also be done through Control
Panel – Add/Remove Programs.). Also do a Find for and manually delete the qtw.ini file. Once all versions are uninstalled,
reinstall Quick Time from the program CD-ROM. |
Issue: QuickTime – Videos do not run on the Win
98 platform. |
Solution: The videos in the product don’t display on
Windows 98. It doesn’t lock up, but
the customer only sees an outline of the Quick Time display frame and hears
the audio for the movie. The movie
itself doesn’t show up. This affects
all versions/correlation’s (California, National, North Carolina, and all
Sampler Books 1, 2, and 3) utilizing either QuickTime 2.1.1 or 3.0, the video
only plays on the Win 95, NT or Mac platforms. Although we were
told there is no workaround, we have alleviated this situation for some
customers by: 1. Adjusting display settings to 256 colors and
640x480 pixels, 2. Lowering hardware acceleration 3. Lowering the draw method to bitmap (bmp). |

Solution: It is not located in Glencoe, per the user
guide. It is located in Start,
Programs, and then Glencoe Science Voyages. |
Issue: The program won’t launch
when double-clicking the Glencoe icon. |
Solution: 1. Make sure the CD is in the CD drive. 2. Quit all programs that are running, including
screen savers. 3. Launch a CD from a different program to determine
if there is a hardware problem. 4. Inspect all cable connections to the computer’s
hardware. 5. Open Windows
Explorer and find the CD-ROM drive
(usually D: or E :). Then double-click
the desired file in your file listing, for example, LifeSci.exe. 6. Run Setup
to ensure that the installation was complete. |

and go to the Control Panel. 2.
Double-click
on System and click on the Advanced
tab. 3.
Click on the Settings
button in the Performance section. 4.
Click on the Advanced tab under Performance Options.

Click the Set
button and click Ok to exit all menus. 8.
Start the
program. Note: Sometimes decreasing it will work as well.
The steps are the same for decreasing only use a smaller Initial and Maximum
Size. Decreasing the Virtual Memory will require the computer to be
restarted. |

Solution: This issue only
occurs on some Windows 2000 and XP machines. It is a random occurrence that
we can sometimes reproduce. The only workaround is to run the program using
Compatibility Mode. Please see below for steps on how to do this. Windows 2000 Instructions:
How to
Enable: These steps must be performed on each machine. When
following these steps, please be sure you are logged in as administrator
to the machine. The Compatibility-mode technology
is not exposed by default. 1.
Log
on to the workstation as Administrator. 2.
Click
Start, and then click Run. 3.
In
the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK, where %SystemRoot% is the drive and folder in which Windows is
installed: (there is a space between 32 and the first %): regsvr32
%systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll 4.
You
should get a message stating it was successful. 5.
After enabling
compatibility on Windows 2000 use the Windows XP instructions to activate it. Windows XP Instructions:
1. Click on Start, Programs, Glencoe, Program’s executable. 2. Do not start the program by left clicking on the icon, instead RIGHT
click on the program icon. 3. Left click on Properties 4. Click on compatibility 5. Choose Windows 95. 6. Click Apply and OK and then try the program. |

Solution: 1.
Check the Extensions folder in the System Folder to ensure
that the required extensions are there and are turned on. 2.
If the computer has an external CD-ROM drive, check the SCSI connections. To do so, go to the hard drive and find the
utility program that checks SCSI devices, such as SCSI Probe or FWB Toolkit. Then, use the
program to scan the SCSI chain to
find what devices are connected, such as the CD-ROM, external hard drives,
and so on. If the CD-ROM drive appears
from within the utility program, select the Mount command. 3.
If necessary, reinstall the CD-ROM software drivers from the System Installation disk. |

Issue: The
program won’t launch when double-clicking the start-up icon. |

Solution: 1.
Ensure the CD
is in the CD-ROM drive. 2.
Quit all other
programs that are running, including screen savers. 3.
Check all
cable connections to the computer’s hardware 4.
Confirm that
the computer has enough free RAM to run the program. To do so, click and pull down the Apple menu (Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen) and select About This Macintosh. Check the Largest Unused Block. If
the computer does not have at least 6100KB free RAM, then you may be able to
add more by disabling certain extensions that are automatically engaged when
you start the computer. 5.
Launch a CD
from a different program to determine if there is a hardware problem. |

Issue: Help file sometimes appears with a black background and only screen
images are visible. |
Solution: Try opening Help from another screen, or
exit the program and logon again. This
is an issue with the palette/HTML code designation for the background color,
which cannot be fixed. |
Solution: A font spacing problem was encountered in
the “Spanish Quizzes.” Any word with
an accented character connects to
the next word that follows it, combining the two words. This problem will not be corrected because
the HTML coding used is an old one that can’t be read on the newer Mac OS. |
