ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS:

Issue: What are the differences between Interactive Grammar and Language Workbook on diskettes or on CD-ROM?

Solution: There are presently no known differences between the two media (besides the fact that the diskettes are slower).  You will notice that The Writer's Choice only comes with diskettes because it is from 1996.  The Reader's Choice has an option of diskettes or CD-ROM.

Issue: What are the differences in Interactive Grammar and Language Workbook for Reader's Choice and Writer's Choice, the Glencoe Interactive Grammar and the BCW/BEW?

Solution: Reader's Choice and Writer's Choice are identical programs (with the exception of labeling and default installation location). Level 6 in Reader's Choice is the same as Level 6 in the Writer's Choice program.  They will install into different directories if the customer does not change the default.  The short cut will refer to which ever text the level is from.

The standalone version, Glencoe Interactive Grammar, is only available in one level and does not have any Teacher Utilities.  It has the same engine as the GIG and Language Workbook.  Schools would normally choose the standalone version to complement a post-secondary text to add in the extra practice and technology.

BCW and BEW are the same engine as the two versions above, but have completely different content than any other version.

Issue: What rights are needed for installing and student operation?

Solution: Installer must have necessary access privileges.  The installer and instructor must have write-access privileges to the program directory.  Students must have read-access privileges to the files in the program directory.

Issue: The correct answers do not print for the incorrectly answered items on a student report.

Solution: The preference options are initially set to print answers for only the lesson exercises, not Unit Review or Cumulative Review exercises.  In addition, for subjective, or open-ended, exercises, only student-generated answers are printed.  (If you want a printout of suggested answers for such exercises, choose the Print exercise answer keys option after you access the Teacher Utilities and enter your password.)

You can change the preferences so the program will print student responses and corrections for lesson, Unit Review, and Cumulative Review exercises.  Use the Set Preferences option in the Teacher Utilities to change the settings.

Issue: The fonts used for the Learning Hints, exercises, and reports do not appear properly.

Solution: The Interactive Grammar and Language Workbook (Windows) software requires the following TrueType fonts: Arial, Times New Roman, and Courier New.

The Interactive Grammar and Language Workbook (Macintosh) version requires Geneva, Courier, and Times.

Issue: A student forgets his or her password.

Solution: Use the Update Student Information option in the Teacher Utilities to find a student's password.

Issue: The teacher password does not work or is not available.

Solution: Instructors, please contact Glencoe Software Support at 1-800-437-3715 for this information.

Issue: A student's score was not recorded properly.

Solution: You can use the Update Student Information option in the Teacher Utilities to change the score for any exercise.

Issue: The program does not correctly interpret a student's typed response.

Solution: The program does not accept misspelled words.  Proper capitalization is also required.  For example, suppose that a student enters "they" in response to an item for which "They" is the correct answer.  The program will indicate that the response is incorrect; the student did not capitalize the word.

If a student's response appears to match the answer but is still scored as "Incorrect", the student may have entered an extra space as part of their response.

Issue: A student cannot repeat an exercise.

Solution: The initial preference settings prevent students from repeating a Unit Review or Cumulative Review exercise.  This setup allows you to use the review exercises for assessment.  If you want students to be able to repeat any exercise, use the Set Preferences option in the Teacher Utilities to change the settings.

If a student selects a review exercise and begins to work on the exercise, the program will mark it as completed.  This feature is designed to prevent students from scanning the items prior to completing an exercise.  However, a student may accidentally choose a review exercise.  Even in these instances, a student will not be able to repeat that exercise.  Using the Update Student Information option in the Teacher Utilities, you can change the score for any exercise or indicate that a student can repeat the exercise.

Issue: The Score button is not available for an exercise.

Solution: The Score button is initially disabled for Unit Review and Cumulative Review exercises.  Using the Set Preferences option in the Teacher Utilities, you can change this setting.

The program limits the number of times a student may score (check) an item.  Originally, this limit is set at ninety-nine.  The Set Preferences option allows you to set the limit from one to ninety-nine attempts per item.  After a student reaches the limit, the program disables the Score button for that item.

The Score button is always turned off for subjective, open-ended exercises, for the program cannot verify the student responses for these exercises.

Issue: The program does not show the performance results for some exercises.

Solution: The program shows the overall performance results for every exercise except the subjective exercises.  Because the software cannot check the accuracy of exercises that require subjective responses, the program simply notes that the student completed the exercise.  A check appears on the Unit Report and the Summary Report for completed subjective exercises.

Issue: The Learning Hint button in the Toolbar is disabled.

Solution: The Learning Hint button is disabled only if a Learning Hint is not included.  Unit Review and Cumulative Review exercises do not include Learning Hints.  Only a few lesson exercises do not have a Learning Hint.

Issue: The software displays an error message when a student attempts to save his/her work.

Solution: Students must have the proper write-access privileges before they can save their work to a network server.  Initially, the program attempts to save new student records in the program directory/folder.

Usually, students do not have the proper access privileges to save data at the location used to store the program.  Either grant students the appropriate rights or identify a different location for saving data.

Issue: New student records are not saved in the appropriate location.

Solution: By default this software attempts to save new student records in the program directory/folder.  Change the data path using the Set Data Location option.

Issue: The student Registration dialog box does not display immediately after the Opening Screen disappears at the beginning of a new session.  Alternatively, the program takes several minutes to display the dialog box after a student chooses the Open Record option.

Solution: The default data location is set so that the program searches for the student records in the program directory/folder.  The program searches the program directory and all of its subdirectories/folders to locate student records.  If you change the data location incorrectly, the program may be searching the entire hard disk, a task that could require several minutes.  Check the data location setting and identify a more appropriate search path.

Issue: A message indicates that there is not enough memory to run the program.

Solution: On Windows systems close other applications to free additional memory.  If the problem persists, make sure that the virtual memory option is enabled.

On Macintosh computers verify that you have at least 2MB of free memory.  Quit other applications before running the Interactive Grammar and Language Workbook software.  If you get a low-memory message while running the program, use the Get Info Finder option to increase the memory requirement.

Issue: Changes made to the preferences apply to only one level.

Solution: The preferences apply to a specific level even if you have multiple grade levels of the Interactive Grammar and Language Workbook software in the same location.  If, for example, you use the Level 7 Teacher Utilities to change the preferences, the new preferences apply to only those students using the Level 7 software.  You will need to change the preferences on every level you have installed.

Issue: What steps are required to remove (uninstall) the program?

Solution: Windows: Use the File Manager or Windows 95/98 Explorer to delete the Interactive Grammar and Language Workbook files.  One program file and two help files exist for each level (for example, rc07.exe, rc07.hlp, and utility.hlp).  A configuration file (for example, rc07.cfg) may also be stored in the program directory.  To delete student files, use the Remove Student Records option in the Teacher's Utilities.  Alternatively, you can delete the files using a system utility.  The program creates a single file for each student.  A file name is based on a student's last name with an extension that identifies the grade level (for example, kinney.r07).

Macintosh: Drag the program icon into the Trash and choose the Empty Trash option.  There is only one program file for each level.  A configuration file (for example, RC Prefs - Level 7) may also be stored in a Configuration folder in the program directory.  To delete student files, use the Remove Student Records option in the Teacher Utilities.  Alternatively, you can delete the files by dragging them to the Trash.  The program creates a single file for each student.  A file name is based on a student's last name with an extension that identifies the grade level--for example, Kinney (RC7).

Issue: I am trying to delete a student, but they continue to be displayed.  How do I permanently get them out of the system?

Solution:  You will need to search for *.gig files and delete them.  The *.gig files contain all student information and data.
